Partial dentures are a great option for those who may have a few teeth in a row that have fallen out or are so damaged that you want them replaced. Most partial dentures are removable and often consist of replacement teeth attached to pink or gum-colored plastic bases. Partial dentures may clasp onto the surrounding natural teeth with a metal framework or have other types of connectors that are more natural looking.

What Can I Expect from Partial Dentures?

The first thing that people notice after receiving partial dentures is the completeness and improved appearance of their smile. Additionally, they often notice an improvement in their speech and chewing abilities.

Like with most things, partial dentures will take some getting used to in the beginning. They will likely feel awkward or bulky at first. This is completely normal and the awkwardness will resolve. The more you wear them, the quicker you will get accustomed to them.

When patients receive new partial dentures, Dr. Luck will be sure the denture fits into place easily. If the denture puts too much pressure on a particular area, that spot will become sore. We don’t want that of course! If you feel pain with the placement of the partial denture, Dr. Luck will adjust it to fit more comfortably.

Even if you experience discomfort after wearing it for a while, adjustments can be made. After making adjustments, Dr. Luck will give other specific instructions as to how long you should wear the partial denture and when to take it out. Usually, partial dentures are removed before going to bed and put back in upon waking.

Removing and reinserting your partial dentures will also require some practice but for most, it becomes second nature and is done without thinking about it.

Few Tips Regarding New Partial Dentures:

  • Never force the partial denture into position by biting down. This could bend or break the clasps
  • Eat soft foods that are cut into small pieces with new partial dentures
  • Chew on both sides of the mouth to keep even pressure
  • Avoid foods that are very hard or extremely sticky
  • Practice reading out loud to get used to talking with partial dentures, and repeat words that give you trouble
  • Clean your partial dentures over a soft towel or the sink so it doesn’t fall and break
  • When not in your mouth use a recommended denture cleaner (Do not chew, swallow, or gargle with denture cleanser!!)
  • Do not use toothpaste on your partial dentures as it is too harsh
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or a specialized denture brush
  • Store your denture in a soaking solution or water when it’s not in your mouth
  • Always rinse your partial dentures thoroughly before placing them in your mouth.

What Can I Expect from Partial Dentures?

If well taken care of, most partial dentures can last between 5-7 years. However, adjustments to your partial denture may be necessary. As we age, our mouths can change. Bone and gum ridges can recede or shrink, causing the denture to not fit properly or cause pain.
